The African American Culture Art
The first step i walk into the gallery room, i saw people, piece, and people talking basic on the piece. the room was dark, only few light shine on the piece itself. Different than other gallery, the dark surrounding feeling gives people calm to think. and the space between piece gives people different feeling from looking at the piece.
The first art which got me attention was the small projection film, the film was abstracted, from the artist’s enplane, it was from a TV show back in 70s. The reason i said it was abstracted because the film was black and white and it had been added color on it digitally, the color made the film unrecognizable, because of it, the film became an art piece.
On the bigger projector was a continuing loop video, according to the artist, the video was to record a African American’s life; in the video, she uses also abstract to simulate travel, a rectangle separate the background and foreground, on the back ground she uses organic views, and the foreground she uses geometric views. When i look at the film, i saw a black child looking at the sky with a innocent face, then the video switches the traveling between cities. In my opinion, this video is to express how African American feels about they moved to a new country.
On the other side of the wall, was seven piece of abstract art from the projector video. seven picture form in a shape that looks like 凸(means something pop out) in Chinese. all of the pieces have similarities, which are the rectangle in the center of each peace, however, each peace are somehow different, some peace are darker color, some show more movement in the picture. On the left side of the wall, was a small box with two window that i have to put my eye closer to the window to view the video inside. In this small video, there was a tree with dozens of crows with white circles surround them. According to the artists, she wants to express the feeling of black people being surveillance by the government back in 70s. The reason she made the small box and windows is for us to feel like being a part of the government people who monitoring the black people.
After all, this gallery was meaning full. The artists was successful to express what she wants to tell us, and we have a good conversation after the gallery. We both learn something from each other, it was a good lesson for me; it was the first gallery i attended in my life, therefore this is the gallery i will never forget.
